We are more than half way through the year, the long Easter weekend is but a distant dream and Christmas still seems out of arms reach, and I don’t know about you but I don’t think I can survive that long without a break! Fortunately this month provides us with an oasis in the desert, thanks to Woman’s Day on the 9th this weekend is going to be a long one, so it is a perfect time to take a mid-year mini break! Does the thought make you sigh with relief, or leave you gasping for breath at the thought of it breaking the bank rather than giving you the break that you so desperately need? It doesn’t have to be so; Here are 5 Cheap Luxury tips to having an affordable mini break;
Find out if any of your friends are wanting to go away and suggest a group get-away. Not only can this be great fun, you get to split the costs of accommodation. You can also chat to your friends and see if anyone has a holiday home that they are not using, you can get a lot by just asking.
2. Share the driving
This is a perfect idea if you are heading for the coast or planning a long trip. Even if you are not going to be holidaying together find out if anyone is looking for a lift to your destination. You can split the cost of the petrol and the toll fees. This really only works if you don’t have kids or if you have a car that can fit more than four people in it.
3. Padkos (Afrikaans word translated as road food)
Buying food at convenience stores can get very expensive rather pack a picnic and taking your own snacks in the car can save you a fortune. Most rest stops have a picnic area where you can take a break and stretch your legs a bit.
4. Stay close to home
You don’t have to go far to feel like you have had a break. If you live in Joburg why not try Parys or the Magalieseburg, or Haartebeesport Dam, you needn’t drive more than 2 hours and you will feel like you are a million miles away.
5. Rough it
I know this may not be everyone’s cup of tea but some of my best holidays have been in a tent. Camping is much cheaper than a B&B and even Self Catering accommodation cannot compete. Yes, it isn’t cushy and can be uncomfortable but if you are looking for an adventure nothing can beat it.
So to all the women – a happy Woman’s Day. Have a lovely, safe long weekend!!
Happy Travels!
